FREETOWN - After two consecutive rainouts, the conclusion of the first round for the African region took place this morning, with heavily favored Sierra Leone defeating Ghana in an 8-0 tour de force of power, skill, and pitching. Although the outcome was expected, home team Sierra Leone achieved victory in a solid fashion, chalking up three home runs and allowing only one hit. The Sierra Leone offense got into gear in the second inning with 4 runs, and added to their lead later in the 3rd, 6th, and 8th. With their victory, Sierra Leone has proven themselves a team threatening to indeed go far in this tournament, and this victory looked like merely a tune-up for the next stages. Their next match is expected to also be not much of a challenge, as they face 7th seeded Namibia in round 2.
